From the Mercury News (Feb. 4, 2022): Frederick Clegg October 9, 1944 - December 25, 2021 San Luis Obispo Frederick Wingfield Clegg died on Christmas night, December 25, 2021, in San Luis Obispo, California, surrounded by family. Dr. Clegg was 77. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, the son of Owen Frederick and Helen Wynn Clegg. He was a proud alumnus of Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, where he received a B.S. in Engineering Science, and Stanford University, where he earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. He remained in the Bay Area upon graduating from Stanford, residing in Cupertino until later retiring to San Luis Obispo in 2006. As an electrical and computer engineer in the early days of Silicon Valley, Dr. Clegg enjoyed a long career that spanned both academia – as a professor at Santa Clara University, San Jose State University, and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo – and the corporate world, working at Valley stalwarts such as Hewlett Packard and Sun Microsystems. Dr. Clegg was one of the founding organizers of the annual Asilomar Microprocessor (now Microcomputer) Workshop, which continues to be a wonderful place for high-tech professionals to meet, share ideas, and collaborate. An engineer through and through, Dr. Clegg had an insatiable curiosity about the inner workings of all things mechanical and electrical, leading him to hobbies that included tinkering with antique clocks, HAM radios, and even airplanes. An avid pilot, he worked as a Certified Flight Instructor before and after retirement. Dr. Clegg was a devoted fan of jazz music, and would proudly share his passion with anyone willing to listen to a brief jazz history lesson. A life-long learner, he was always up for attending lectures on just about any subject. He was particularly fond of the events put on by MindWalk and Life Long Learners of the Central Coast, where he served on the audio visual team. He was known by many to be a prankster and instilled both his children with a healthy mischievous streak. He loved to playfully tease people, but at his heart he was a very caring and generous individual who always rooted for the underdog. Dr. Clegg is survived by his sister Emily Griffin (Dan); his wife of 35 years, Meg Crockett; his daughter Carrie Clegg Gilbert (Ben); his son, Thomas Clegg (Lindsay); and three grandsons Logan, Wesley, and Sawyer. A memorial will be planned in the coming months. Condolences may be sent to PO Box 3634, San Luis Obispo, California, 93403. Donations may be made in his honor to any of the following: KCSM Radio Station, The SLO Food Bank, Oakland University, Pacific Wildlife Care, or other worthy causes you know he would applaud.
